The cypress hollow twist is carved from a single 8" diameter log grown in Devon at our farm over the last 20yrs or so. Pink ivory wood is one of the most expensive, scarce and most dense timbers in the world with some of the highest wastage rates too due to internal defects to logs. Specific gravity of the timber is approx 0.9-0.95 which means it is so dense it would almost sink if floated in water. It's an extremely difficult timber to work because of its density and reverse grain and is a very variable timber in colour and quality. The stock we have at the moment includes some of the deepest pink we have every seen, like the example shown here. We feel very privileged to have found it and have some short logs up to 8"x8" section sizes which is also extraordinarily rare. This batch of timber came from an area in South Africa that the SA Government had allowed clearance permits for. They do not normally allow much logging of Pink ivorywood unless the trees are in the way of land re-purposing. Historically, the timber was known as the wood of Kings in Africa, with severe penalties for anyone using the material for non Royal destiny. We anticipate that Pink ivorywood ( Berchemia zeyheri ) will become CITES classified in the not too distant future, though surprisingly, it's IUCN classification is listed as of 'Least Concern' (2025).
