Amphitrite, the wife of Poseidon, riding in a chariot across the water.
Amphitrite, the sea goddess, is seated in a chariot and holds a sickle and a sheaf of wheat in her hand, perhaps symbolizing fertility, harvest, or the connection between land and sea. The chariot is guided by a winged child, likely Triton, the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite. Triton is often depicted as a merman or a youthful figure who controls the seas, sometimes seen blowing a conch shell.
The chariot is pulled by hippocampi, mythological creatures with the upper bodies of horses and the lower bodies resembling fish or serpents. These creatures are often depicted as Poseidon’s steeds in ancient art and myth, symbolizing the powerful and mysterious nature of the ocean.
In Greek mythology, Amphitrite is a significant figure as the queen of the sea, ruling alongside Poseidon. Her association with water is further reinforced by her connection to Triton, a sea deity, and the hippocampi, which emphasize her dominion over the waves. The scene in this relief captures the majesty of the oceanic world, with Amphitrite commanding the creatures of the sea, symbolizing her powerful role in the mythological hierarchy.
